SUBSCRIPTION

The procedure of subscription was introduced in the 17th century on the German book market to the appearance of works that were most likely due to their specific content, their artistic design or due to their planned scope only

difficult to negotiate. This method was also used in bookstores of the 18th century, for example, in copper engraving, multivolume encyclopaedias or scientific literature to determine a demand adapted to the amount of circulation and to ensure the coverage of production costs. A special form of subscription was the prenumeration, , where the work had to be paid in advance

Wine Trade

In the wine trade, however, money flows, because even before the young wine is bottled, the subscribed wine must be paid. This is the only way to give the wine buyer a certainty that they will be able to enjoy and enjoy the coveted goods and coveted vintages later on.
In some cases, the young wine is stored after its payment for another three years in the winery in barrels, before it is bottled and delivered to consumers. From a vineyard is known that you will have to wait after payment four years before the wine will be delivered: the Sauternes sweet wine of Château d'Yquem.
In other words, the subscription is also a speculation: one assumes that the wine will increase in value until its delivery. It's basically a commodity futures deal. The subscription of wine is to be found primarily in Bordeaux wines, only occasionally there are wineries in other areas that use the same procedure.
An extraordinary feature is the subscription sale by buyer list. This process has become known at a winery in Burgundy: the interested parties write themselves in a list. On this list, only the top hundred places are available for purchase, and the placeholders must pay for the wine after allocation to the price unilaterally fixed by the winery. Who does not pay, falls from the list, and is expected to have no chance for many years to get the wine directly. Because there are thousands waiting to buy: at the Domaine Romanée-Conti. At intervals of several years, the domain informs on which rank a prospective customer has advanced.
