Ribeiro

 

Ribeiro (Galician: Shore) is a Spanish wine-growing region in the northwestern region of Galicia and is located near the Portuguese border. Approximately 2,685 hectares of cultivated vineyards (as of 2005) in flat areas and slopes between 75 and 400 m above sea level. NN are located in a triangular area on both sides of the Miño and its tributaries Avia, Arnoia and Barbantiño in the northwest of the province of Ourense.

The wine-growing area is divided into the 13 municipalities of Ribadavia, Arnoia, Castrelo de Miño, Carballeda de Avia, Leiro, Cenlle, Beade, Punxín and Cortegada, as well as parts of the municipalities of Boborás, San Amaro, Toén, Carballiño and Ourense.

Often, the vineyard is subdivided into the subregions Ribeiro de Avia, Ribeiro del Miño and Ribeiro de Arnoia.

Since July 1957, the area has the status of D.O. The regulations are generally strictly monitored.

A total of 109 bodegas fill the wines of the 5,983 winegrowers in the region and market them. Over 90% of production is destined for the domestic market.
