Navarra

Navarra (Spanish Navarra, Basque Nafarroa, official name: Spanish Comunidad Foral de Navarra, Basque Nafarroako Foru Komunitatea, German as much as Foralgemeinschaft Navarra) is an autonomous community and province in northern Spain. It includes the southern part of the Pyrenees, part of the historic kingdom of Navarre. Capital is Pamplona (Basque Iruña). The total population of Navarre is 605,876.

North-east, adjacent to the more famous Rioja, Spain's flagship wine region, criss-crossed by various tributaries of the Ebros, the Navarre region produces clean and full-bodied wines that have long been underestimated. The climatic conditions allow the relatively small region a qualitatively quite high-quality crop. Hot summers, yet with enough rain and moisture to follow on pleasantly warm spring days. The winters are characterized by the cold winds from the northern Pyrenees. Almost exclusively red wines, mainly from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and these often pure, carry the reputation of this region more and more to the outside.
